iPhone 17 Pro Review — The New Default Choice
The iPhone 17 Pro is the phone most people buying a new iPhone right now should actually get. It keeps the titanium-adjacent build quality Apple settled into with the 15 and 16 Pro generations, refines the camera bump into a cleaner-looking plateau, and moves to the A19 Pro chip — enough of a jump over the 16 Pro's A18 Pro that it's noticeable in sustained workloads like exporting 4K video, not just synthetic benchmarks.
The camera system is the clearest upgrade: the same 48MP main sensor family Apple has used for a couple of generations now, but with a genuinely improved telephoto that holds detail better past 5x, and noticeably better low-light consistency across all three lenses rather than just the main one. Apple Intelligence features are also more baked-in here than they were on the 16 Pro at launch — less waiting on Apple to ship promised features later.
Battery life is the other real-world win. Apple has quietly been improving efficiency generation over generation, and the 17 Pro is the first Pro model that comfortably gets a heavy user through a full day without hunting for a charger by evening — something the 16 Pro couldn't always promise.
None of this makes the 16 Pro a bad phone — it's still a strong buy at a lower price if you find one. But for anyone buying new, the 17 Pro's combination of camera, battery and chip improvements make it the easy default recommendation this year.
