Grok 5: Why xAI's Most-Hyped Model Keeps Missing Its Own Deadline

Grok 5: Why xAI's Most-Hyped Model Keeps Missing Its Own Deadline

Elon Musk has been promising Grok 5 since before Grok 4.5 even existed. More than a year after he first teased it, the model still hasn't shipped — and the story behind the delay has gotten tangled up with one of the biggest corporate restructurings in AI this year.

A Timeline of Broken Promises

According to multiple tech outlets tracking the model's progress, Musk originally said Grok 5 would arrive "before the end of 2025," floating the claim around the same time he said Grok 4 had beaten GPT-5 on the ARC-AGI benchmark. That date slipped. A Q1 2026 window, which Musk had reportedly confirmed directly, came and went without a release. xAI's own account then reportedly pointed to Q2 2026 — specifically by June 30 — as the next likely target. That deadline passed too.

Rather than go silent, xAI has kept shipping interim models to keep the Grok brand current: Grok 4.3 reportedly launched April 30, 2026, and Grok 4.5 followed on July 8–9, pitched by Musk as "Opus-class" but faster and cheaper to run. Notably, Grok 4.5 launched without independent benchmarks attached — they reportedly followed a day later — which is the kind of detail worth flagging rather than taking at face value. As of the most recent reporting available, Grok 4.5 remains xAI's flagship model, and Grok 5 is still described as "in training," not shipped.

The SpaceXAI Wrinkle

Part of what makes Grok 5's delay interesting is the corporate chaos surrounding it. SpaceX reportedly completed its acquisition of xAI in February 2026 in an all-stock deal that valued the combined company at roughly $1.25 trillion. Musk had signaled in May that xAI would stop existing as a standalone entity and operate instead as "the AI products from SpaceX." That became official in early July, when xAI's X account was renamed @SpaceXAI alongside a new logo — folding Grok, X (the social platform), and xAI's other products under one SpaceX-branded umbrella.

It's worth being careful here: this merger and rebrand are reported as completed facts by multiple outlets, not rumors. What's speculative is the connection between that restructuring and Grok 5's repeated slippage — no one has officially confirmed the reorg is why the model keeps missing dates, but the timing overlap is hard to ignore, and some industry watchers have floated it as a likely factor.

What Grok 5 Is Rumored to Actually Be

Specs remain genuinely unconfirmed. The most-cited community estimate puts Grok 5 at around 6 trillion parameters using a mixture-of-experts architecture, trained on xAI's Colossus 2 supercluster — which Musk has said crossed the 1-gigawatt power threshold, with an upgrade to 1.5 gigawatts reportedly targeted for April 2026 (unconfirmed whether that was hit). A separate, less-corroborated rumor puts a sibling or variant model as high as 10 trillion parameters, and sources don't agree on which model is actually "Grok 5" versus a training partner running alongside it on the same cluster. None of this has been confirmed by xAI in a model card or technical report, so treat the numbers as industry speculation rather than spec sheet fact.

The Betting Markets Are Watching Too

Grok 5's on-again, off-again timeline has become enough of a running joke that prediction markets have contracts on it. Kalshi and Polymarket listings have tracked the odds of a release by various 2026 deadlines, with one live market asking whether Grok 5 will be released by October 31, 2026 — resolving "yes" only if the model is made publicly available by that date. Earlier snapshots from around May put the odds of a release "before October" at roughly 80%, though it's unclear whether that held, since this report could not independently verify whether Grok 5 has shipped as of this writing.

Why It Matters

If and when it lands, Grok 5 is positioned to compete directly with OpenAI's GPT-5.x line, Google's Gemini 3, and Anthropic's Claude models — all of which have shipped major updates while Grok 5 remained in training. For a company that just folded itself into a $1.25 trillion space-and-AI conglomerate, the pressure to finally deliver a genuine next-generation flagship — rather than another "4.x" stopgap — is only growing. Whether that happens by Halloween, by year's end, or slips into 2027 the way so many of its predecessors' deadlines did is, at this point, anyone's guess.

Bottom line: Nothing about Grok 5's release date or specs is officially confirmed. What is confirmed is that xAI has now missed at least three self-imposed deadlines, folded into SpaceX as SpaceXAI, and continues to ship interim Grok 4.x models while the "real" Grok 5 remains, in the company's own words, still in training.
